Everyone knows that smoking is bad, but smokers would know that quitting the nasty habit is easier said than done.
The moment you drag on that filtered-tip thingamajig, you’re destructing your body from the inside out, from increasing your chances to develop lung cancer to premature ageing of the skin, you’re taking the road to hell, and by hell, I mean a life riddled with chronic diseases.
1) Goodbye lungs
I am sure you’ve heard of this one, but your lungs which were once pink would eventually turn black.
2) You will never enjoy food in its full glory
Ever noticed that your appetite disappears the moment you smoke?
That’s because smoking suppresses your appetite by decreasing your taste and smell.
So you won’t get the full sensory experience when you’re devouring that lush chocolate cake.
It’s like your whole life is tinted with a black and white filter.
3) Your brain suffers too
While your lungs struggle to hold plumes of smoke, your brain gets a good beating too.
Smoking considerably reduces brain matter as well as oxygen supply to the brain.
It has been proven to promote the appearance of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.
4) Yellow yellow, dirty fellow
If yellow is your favourite colour, then you’re in luck!
Smoking helps to yellow your teeth and nails (who needs yellow nail polish!)
The fingers that hold the cigarettes is probably the yellowest, as the tar and nicotine are deposited in the nails.
And pair it with low oxygen levels in the blood, you will get insta-worthy yellow-tinged nails.
5) Lower sex drive
There are many reasons as to why some people suffer from erectile dysfunction and one of them is cigarette smoking.
Smoking damages your blood vessels which lead to poor blood supply to you-know-what.
But that can be reversed if you stub that damn cigarette.
6) Your throat is basically a warzone
The most immediate effect a smoker can notice is the itching of the throat.
The smoke affects the mucosal cell lining of your throat which can cause irritation, infections and perpetual dryness.
On top of that, the chemicals and heat from the smoke weaken the muscles in your gullet—the one that keeps your food from coming up your throat—which could lead to acid reflux.
So yeah, your throat is pretty much dead if you continue to smoke.
7) Don’t go breaking your heart
You can recover from a heartbreak but smoking will drag your heart in the mud and at times, there is no turning back.
The carbon monoxide in your tobacco reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood which means your heart has to work twice as hard to supply oxygenated blood to all parts of your body and not to mention, nicotine helps produce adrenaline causing a spike in your blood pressure.
It also damages the lining of your arteries, allowing a build-up of fatty material—narrowing the artery which can lead to heart attack.
8) You get older
If you’re a vainpot, it would be wise to ditch the fags as soon as possible.
Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that gets transported to your skin which is needed to maintain its youthfulness and accelerates the ageing process.
9) Your ears will start to hurt
By now, you would have realised that all parts of your body would eventually suffer, including your ears.
10) You will have a signature stench on you
Don’t bother wasting your money on cologne cause you will start smelling like your pack of cigarettes.
Tobacco can stick to your clothes and hair, not to mention if someone kisses you, it’s like kissing an ashtray.
