7 places to go during the National Day weekend that are absolutely free of charge

SG50 promotions are a dime a dozen these days, with some lasting the whole year. But why should you go for a mere 10% discount when you can go all the way and look for things that won’t cost you a dollar. Here are some places that are offering free admission during the National Day weekend, but be prepared to face the crowd.

1. ActiveSG swimming pools
Beat the heat and take advantage of this promotion during the long National Day weekend for all Singaporeans and Permanent Residents. Bring the whole family along and spend some time having fun in the sun, it’s not everyday you get free admission to the swimming pool after all.

2. ActiveSG gyms
If you’ve been meaning to get back in shape, now’s the best time to do so. All ActiveSG gyms are offering free admission for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents from 7th to 10th August. This also serves as a good opportunity if you’ve been thinking of signing up for an ActiveSG gym membership too. Think of it as a free trial before you commit.

3. Science Centre Singapore
Satisfy your inner scientist and visit the Science Centre in Jurong East during the Golden Jubilee weekend. As an added bonus, Singapore citizens receive free admission to six other attractions, including the Omni Theatre and Snow City. There’s no surprise if you end up spending your whole day in that one location and the kids might just hanker for a return visit.
Address: 15 Science Centre Road, Singapore 609081

4. Ride a cable car
Do note that this promotion is only available on 10th August, but it lasts from 8.45am to 10pm. Sentosa is offering free cable car rides from Harbourfront or any of the Sentosa island stations. Forget the monorail, boardwalk or car if you’re planning to visit Sentosa on this date and take the cable car instead.

5. ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands
From 7th to 9th August, entry is free for Singapore citizens and Permanent Residents. The exhibitions include Singapore Stories: Then, Now and Tomorrow, Dreamworks Animation: The Exhibition, The Deep and ArtScience’s own A Journey Through Creativity. There’s something for the whole family, much like most of the attractions listed here.

6. Singapore Botanic Gardens
Visiting the Singapore Botanic Gardens is free on a daily basis but during the Golden Jubilee Weekend, the National Orchid Garden is offering free entry as well, waiving the usual $5 fee. There’s an SG50 carnival at the UNESCO heritage site to boot, so you might just want to head down and who knows, who might just want to cultivate your own garden after leaving.
Address: 1 Cluny Road, Singapore 259569
