74-year-old man suffers fatal fall in Bukit Merah home

A 74-year-old man was set to receive his new National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) after getting robbed last year (2016), but unexpectedly fell down in his home and died just two days before the collection date (Jun 19).

The incident happened on Saturday (Jun 17) at around 9am, in the victim’s home at Block 105, Bukit Merah, reports Shin Min Daily News via Lianhe Zaobao.

The  deceased, a wheelchair-dependent, shared his one room flat with his 63-year-old ex-wife.

The deceased’s ex-wife told reporters that when she left for work at around 6am on the day of the incident, the deceased seemed normal, even energetic:

“He woke up particularly early that morning, and said he wanted to have his breakfast.

“I made him a cup of coffee and left.

“I did not expect to receive a call at 11am from the police, telling me that there had been an incident at home.”

After she rushed home, she found the deceased lying beside his electronic wheelchair.

She added:

“He had already put on his clothes.

“I believe that he was about to head out and slipped as he was boarding his wheelchair.

“He often fell down in the past too.”

A domestic helper from the unit next door later told the deceased’s ex-wife that she had heard the deceased calling for help.

When she arrived at the house, she found the deceased on the floor, and his pulse was weak.

She immediately called for the police and an ambulance.

Unfortunately, the deceased did not make it and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His ex-wife revealed that the deceased had been robbed in 2016, with his NRIC, and ATM cards stolen.

He was set to receive his new NRIC on Monday (Jun 19).

She shook her head, lamenting:

“He would have gotten a new NRIC in two days, now instead the new card would be handed to the mortuary.”
